Duality — A Solo Exhibit & Augmented Reality Experience by Artist Tad Smith

Duality is a concept that is based on the idea that two seemingly opposite things can actually be interconnected and mutually dependent on themselves. There are many contrasting sides to humans and those sides always connect in some way. This exhibit communicates the relationship, interconnections, and perceptions of oneself. Exploring the seen and unseen. We are all part of everything. Individually and collectively. Who are we to ourselves? To our friends, to our family, to our community.

The exhibit explores the concept of duality through augmented reality, sculpture, paintings, textile, and video. It features a range of media, materials, technology and techniques. The paintings in this exhibit appear to be 2-dimensional but with a scan of a QR code using your phone — a 3-dimensional world emerges using augmented reality — further emphasizing the seen and unseen. Duality will consist of the following experiences:

Alter Ego: A free-standing sculpture depicting the two sides of oneself, exploring the ego.  What do you show? What do you hide?

Reflection: A wall consisting of 19 paintings and six mirrors. Each painting represents a pronoun and encourages self-discovery. What do you see when you look in the mirror?

Roots: Three textile pieces suggesting Mother, Father, Child — the interweavings of family ties. What does family represent to you?

Community: A wall consisting of nine individual wire faces, intertwined creating one piece. What is your community?

My Duality: A blank canvas to express your thoughts and ideas about duality. What is your duality?

The goal of this exhibit is to promote expression and open the discussion of duality, how it effects us as individuals and as a community. By accepting the dual sides of our existence and recognizing the dual nature of the world around us, we are able to gain an understanding of the complexities of the human experience. Duality invites us to question, explore, and express ourselves, while creating a sense of belonging among diverse groups in the community. Preview Duality Video.
